Bio-Shrike's History « Thread Started on Jan 27, 2005, 9:50pm »
About twenty years ago, the Department of National Defense in Canada began to realize that the 'superpowered' phenomenon wasn't just going to go away. A team of scientists published a secret report relating their belief that the number of 'superhumans' would increase exponentially in next few years. Those same scientists were given the mandate to study the problem first hand. The result was the Commission for Prenatal Genome Research.
Over the next three years, seven 'conditioned' children were born to three volunteer mothers, each created from different male doners, and each genetically manipulated before conception. Four were males and three were females. The boys all displayed some superior quality before six months were up, but the girls seemed completely ordinairy. Each was given to a different orphanage at around the age of 9 months.
Tanya Augustine, given the name due to her obvious Native traits, was placed in an orphanage in Northern Ontario. Though she later learned that the other two girls had been adopted, she never knew another home until her teens. Her isolation grew when, as a teen, her strange abilities began to manifest. She found she had some small ability to control the emotional state of others, to the point of even being able to put them to sleep with a touch. She found out later, through her Paragon City training, that what she was doing was actually controlling certain biological functions, such as endorphin creation and metabolism.
She learned about the experiments when two of her 'older brothers' came looking for her. They explained how the lab was shut down after a horrible fire, and how they had been spirited away and trained by some of the more sympathetic of the scientists. She was relieved to find she was not alone, but grew bitter towards the Canadian Government and all things military. This, and the promise of a more understanding community drove her to seek out the trainers at Paragon City.
Though her physical traits come from her Native male doner, she never had much of a connection to her Native people, outside of the other children at the orphanage.
She still loves her country, though she distrusts any organized government or military. She also easily succumbs to other forms of prejudice, making her suspicious even of the Peacebringers on her own team.

Though I don't usually go into full out role play, there are certain things that may come out while I'm playing Bio in character that bear explaining.
Tanya has unresolved issues. This coupled with her ability to contol the body-states of herself and others has caused her some real problems.
It has been difficult for her to maintain a close relationship. If she lets her guard down, she risks 'infecting' other people with her emotional state, by unconciously manipulating their endorphins. Due to her cynicism, bitterness, and overall sense of rejection, this can be hard for the average person to bear. Her trainers in Paragon city hope that this effect will diminish as her control over her abilities increases. At this time, her training includes psychological counselling. She has responded well to initial sessions, but still has a lot of emotion to work through.
For her, it means that her emotional state becomes exagerated. For example, if she would normally feel a little down, and her powers kick it, she may feel EXTREMELY depressed. Her emotional defence mechanism for much of this is anger, usually taken out on the minions she has made a career of wailing on. However, it can also come out as dry comedy, cynicism, and downright nasty comments towards those around her. Often Graviton Flux has taken the brunt of this, probably because she feels relatively comfortable around him.
If Star Raven, or another alien is on the team, this will definitely come out as some very prejudiced statements toward that character. Bio-Shrike's xenophobia is legendary among her teammates. Some may wonder why she holds a relatively high position in the group while espousing such views. The truth is, in the past she would have quit the team herself as soon as she found out an alien had been admitted. Her trust of members like Moncton Mauler and Graviton Flux, along with her Paragon City training have softened her a bit, so that her prejudice only comes out as inappropriate comments. Being a wise leader, Canadian Healer makes sure that she is never placed alone on a team of aliens, nor is she given command of the team if an alien is present.
If you are the butt of any nasty comments, especially if your character is a Peacebringer, please don't take it as a personal attack. I will try to limit these to those who are aware of her character. If your character is a Warshade, look out! You think she's suspicious of Peacebringers? You ain't seen nothin' yet!

Bio-Shrike: Leadership Material? « Reply #2 on Feb 5, 2005, 5:56pm »
Bio-Shrike as a Captain:
As a liason for Canadian Vigilance to it's many members, I have been asked to make a public statement regarding one of our founding members, Tanya Augustine.
Bio-Shrike's rank comes directly from being a founding member, and knowing the founding leader, Moncton Mauler, previous to being on the team.
Though she currently holds the rank of Captain, she has been effectively reduced to the Board's secretary (meaning the Board of Captains, of whom Canadian Healer is the chairperson).
In my opinion, this in itself may need to be reviewed, as she doesn't fit the profile of a typical 'secretary'. She can be moody, cynical, and directly question the decisions made by the other captains and group leader. This along with her xenophobic statements has brought her under review in the past. The board claims that 'appropriate discipline action' was taken at the time of the incident and that the object, Star Raven, was satisfied that this was so. What exactly that means was not made public knowledge.
The result, however, was no change in Bio-Shrike's rank or status, except that there are certain restrictions on her in group actions. She is not allowed to be on a team consisting soley of aliens, and she is not allowed to lead a team that includes aliens, or exercise her authority as Captain over an alien. However, it has been observed that her word still carries a lot of weight with the board, regardless of these changes.
As far as leading a field team, she has shown a lot of potential, but still lacks some crucial qualities that would make her an outstanding leader. I have to admint, her judgement seems relatively sound, and her tactics are most often appropriate, but her attitude lacks the ambition and drive of a true leader. She almost never volunteers to form and/or lead a team, and will often defer immediately to another captain, and sometimes another member that she feels may have more experience. Overall, she seems too eager to shed the responsibility.
The few times she has led teams have been very successful, proving that she has the ability. She has been able to use her abilities and position her teammates in order to ambush villains and their minions. She has a good grasp of the overall action and is a keen observer. She stays in touch with her team's endurance and health through her 'bio' abilities, and is willing to sacrifice herself if necessary. She has even been seen trying to draw an enemy's attack away from a Kehldian who was in trouble. She walked away from that encounter stating, 'No one gets to beat on you like that but me...' All of this shows that she has a great empathy and care for her teamates, even those she CLAIMS to dislike, both when she leads and otherwise.
Overall, I would have to conclude that there is a great potential leader here. One that I would gladly follow IF she were ever able to get past her emotional issues. As it stands, I have my doubts as to how soon such a thing may be.... but then, I'm not the group's shrink either....
